Grading

The grade of a karateka is signified by the colour of the belt. When a student starts training they have a white belt. They can then take a grading to gain a yellow belt or 8th Kyu. At successive gradings the colour of the belt changes until they reach a brown belt. At this stage the student is expected to have achieved a reasonable level of competence and they are now perfecting their skills and learning the kata necessary to attain a black belt. The whole process takes a minimum of 4 years.

Kata

All gradings require the learning of a kata. These are choreographed sequences of punches kicks and blocks. The kata below are all the kata that must be learnt and perfected to attain a black belt. Each belt requires the learning of one or more of these kata.

Combinations

These combinations of punches kicks and blocks form the basis of fighting techniques in karate. All these combinations must be learnt and perfected to attain a black belt.

'A' Combinations

1. Step forward moto dachi, punch to chin, thrust to sternum

2. Project forward, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

3. Project forward, leading hand punch to chin, thrust to sternum

4. Right snap kick to stomach, step down, jodan punch to chin, reverse thrust to sternum

5. Feint punch to solar plexus, step and thrust to sternum, left front kick to stomach, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

6. Step back jodan knife hand block, left reverse punch and thrust to sternum

7. Project forward, leading hand gedan uchi, reverse punch and thrust to sternum

8. Slide forward from moto dachi, open hand feint to face, step forward left reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

9. reverse leg foot sweep, jodan puch, thrust to sternum

'B' Combinations

1. Step forward moto dachi, puch to chin, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

2. Project forward, leading hand punch to chin, reverse punch to solar plexus and thrust to sternum

3. Change stance to reverse kamae, right hand jodan punch, thrust to sternum

4. Front kick to stomach, snap kick backto knee, right hand jodan punch on one leg, thrust to sternum

5. Feint punch to solar plexus, step and thrust to sternum, left Jodan roundhouse kick, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

6. Project to the right 45°, leading hand knife hand block from the inside going out, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

7. Step back 45° right, gedan barai, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

8. Slide forward from moto dachi to zenkutsu dachi feint open hand thrust to face, chudan roundhouse kick, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust o sternum

9. reverse leg foot sweep, right jodan punch, left chudan punch , thrust to sternum

'C' Combinations

1. Step forward back fist to head, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

2. Leading leg foot sweep, reverse puch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

3. leading leg foot sweep, leading hand punch to head, thrust to sternum

4. front kick to stomach, snap back kick to zenkutsu dachi, gedan bari, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

5. Feint punch to solar plexus, step and thrust to sternum, reverse leg inside foot sweep, punch to face, thrust to sternum

6. Step back 45° leading hand knife hand block from inside going out, leading leg reverse roundhouse kick to head, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

7. Project to left, reverse hand gedan block, leading hand open covering face, project to right, grab shoulder leading leg foot sweep, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

8. Slide forward from moto dachi to zenkutsu dachi, open hand feint to face, step forward feint reverse punch to solar plexus, draw up the back foot p[lacing leading arm across chest, leading leg foot sweep, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum

9. Reverse leg foot sweep, leading leg jodan roundhouse kick, reverse punch to solar plexus, thrust to sternum
